16th Century – East Barsham, Norfolk, England

Listing Description

"Purported to have been built in or around 1520, Barsham Manor House has played host over the last five centuries to many guests, from monarchs, knights, politicians and celebrities to latter day rock legends. Its most famous guest was undoubtedly King Henry VIII who stayed here on at least five separate occasions (never with the same wife!) whilst visiting the nearby shrine to our Lady of Walsingham and, whilst The Manor's construction has always been attributed to Sir Henry Fermor, Henry VIII once referred to it as "my small country palace in Barsham."

Since the Fermors several other established English names have made their home in this grand old building during the last 500 years. Families such as The Calthorps, The Astleys and more recently The Guinness family, but in the late 1960s East Barsham Manor is rumoured to have been briefly owned by the then manager of The Bee Gees. Village anecdotes suggest that once again The Great Hall was the scene of many a party involving other famous singers and bands of that particular decade.

The house was last updated in the late 1990s, whilst in the ownership of Sir John Guinness, and as one might expect with such a historical building, it would now benefit from some care and attention from its next custodian.

East Barsham is a pretty North Norfolk village, two miles to the north of the market town of Fakenham, five miles to the south of Wells-next-the-Sea and nine miles from Burnham Market."
