Stone Cottage in Lonlay-l`Abbaye, Orne, Normandy, France

Listing Description

"This super stone cottage has masses of character and room to develop further. Situated in a quiet position, with lovely countryside views it is currently used as a holiday home but could be a family house. With a little work it could be a beautiful three bedroom, two bathroom house full of quirky character.

This enchanting cottage is full of character and offers masses of potential to add to, or change the layout of the current living space. It comprises a living/dining room with a corner kitchen, featuring a fireplace with wood burner. An inner hall leads to a double bedroom and shower room with shower, wc, basin and bidet. Above this is a large mezzanine style bedroom with ample room for two beds. On the first floor are another two rooms currently accessed via a loft ladder but there is room to install a staircase and make two bedrooms or a bedroom with dressing/shower room. The house is surrounded by a lawned garden and to the rear is an old barn/garage in need of some renovation."

I wouldn’t exactly call that a kitchen — more like stuff you have in your college dorm room, but still it is a cozy place & with some work could be a really special gem. It’s very appealing.

I can’t quite figure out the layout here. The kitchen stove is obviously on the left side of the house, where the chimney is on the roof. There’s a ladder going up behind the striped couch. But, in the pink TV room with another fireplace, we can see another staircase on the right. And from the description there’s a hall leading to a bedroom/bathroom, so this would suggest this house is 2-room deep but i doubt it. Or these 2 are in the righ-hand side of the house. Jeez, i’m totally puzzled here!

And the kitchen fireplace is originally freestanding, but posts were added on each side.

If you’ve been to New Orleans, Louisiana, you might be reminded of the famous Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop which was built around 1770, if I remember correctly, and is an amazing building, though restored with a bit of a heavy hand. Still a great early structure and quite similar in character to this earlier French home on the exterior. If you find yourself in New Orleans, visit! Especially at night when it is lit by candlelight. It’s great. I love the exterior of this one, too! I love this addendum to the other website and all Kelly does to feed so many house-hungry birds!
