16th Century Chateau in Sarlat-la-Canéda, France

Listing Description

"The castle is part of a park of 4 ha, on the hillside, it is a house with a very simple square plan embellished with lowered wings and two corner turrets. The 16th Century Renaissance facade Chateau with 3 outbuildings and a swimming pool entering the property through a nice driveway. The chateau has still all the characteristics of the 16 century. The chateau was built around 1542.

The floor and its windows (fenêtres a meneaux), the arcaded ground floor which opens up onto a terrace, despite the turrets the chateau has the feeling of a home. It remains a dwelling of modest dimensions, on a human scale, of which a number of these gentlemen of the Perigord had at least two!

First floor: the entrance door provides direct access to the grand salon/music room 50m2, the small sitting room, a study and the formal dining room, kitchen, utility room and half bathroom.

The ground floor stands out because of the local flagstones, wooden original flooring, stained glass windows and open fireplaces. Impressive stone stairways leading from the entrance hall towards the first floor. First floor: study and 4 bedrooms (of which 3 en-suite), passing the corridor coming into the 5th bedroom en-suite with dressing room. Second floor: attic with three small rooms. and two tower rooms. The chateau has undergone little restoration works in the sense of changes made in style over time, everything breathes Renaissance! "

Lovely place. It feels like the right atmosphere to write a Bronte style gothic novel. The floors with the inlaid flowers are charming.

I quite agree with the agent’s comment on the ‘human scale’ appeal of this place. It all appears most livable is its spaces and room dimensions. I’d want to purchase most of the present furnishings as well, since they suit the structural ambience. The ‘down’ shot of the staircase has an “Escher” quality about it :->
