Maison & Farmhouse in Fleuré, France

Listing Description

"Beautiful Maison de Maître needing complete renovation from the roof downwards with separate farmhouse, also needing renovation, separate garages and other outbuildings. Land of almost 5½ hectares (13 acres) including garden, pasture and forest.

The spacious entrance hall (approx: 18m²) has a lovely mosaic tiled floor and leads to living rooms both to the right and the left and straight ahead is the beautiful turned staircase going upstairs. To the right is the former dining room (approx: 26m²) and this is the area where the most recent incumbent was living so is probably the most habitable bit of the house. Beyond the dining room is the kitchen (approx: 19m²) which is a good sized room featuring a beautiful stone chimney piece, a wood-burning range and huge built-in storage cupboards. There is a back door from the kitchen which leads outside to the garages and courtyard parking area which is graced by the most beautiful and bountiful fig tree. Behind the kitchen is the back kitchen (approx: 2.5m²) which houses the sink, plumbing for the washing machine and more storage, as well as a staircase down to the beautiful vaulted cellar (approx: 15m²) where you can store your wine in ideal conditions. If you turn left from the hall you come into two more large rooms with double doors between them, both with fireplaces and with windows to the front and back of the house. The first room you come to (approx: 27.5 m²) has a beautiful ceiling rose and a veranda (approx 10.5m²) on the back which has at some point in the past been used as a summer kitchen as it has access to the garden and a sink and cooker hood. Apart from the main winding staircase which goes all the way to the top floor, there is another back staircase from behind the kitchen which goes as far as the first floor. There are four bedrooms (sizes approx: 26m², 20m², 20m² and 19m²) and three bathrooms on the first floor, and up again to the top floor, there are four rooms (two of approx: 17m² and two of approx: 11.5m²) and a bathroom (approx: 7.6m²). This floor has been used as a separate apartment in the past and it wouldn't take much to do this again. There are two further rooms on this floor, both of about 26m², with beautiful beams which are to top of the two towers to each side of the house. To the side of the house is the beautiful garage building which is split into areas for garage and stables, as well as other rooms of indeterminate use and above is an attic space, so about 150m² of potential to create more usable space here. The farmhouse is behind and although this needs complete renovation has a really nice kitchen/living room of about 35m², with a lovely stone fireplace and windows on two sides. There are two potential bedrooms (approx: 24.5m² and 15m²) and a further room accessed from the outside of about 15m²). All this accommodation is on the ground floor, but the whole of the first floor is loft space and could be made into bedrooms and bathrooms to make a good letting unit. There are various other barns and other outbuildings with a total size of about 700m², all in need of some attention. There is also an interesting lime kiln on the grounds."

This bourgeois house could shine again and I hope it will! I found it on Gmaps: . It is quite close to the main 4-lane road N147 but i hope that because it’s surrounded with forest the car noises are tamed and it feels tranquil.

The Poitou area (near Poitiers) already has a southern feel (compared to the Touraine Loire Valley where i live that is just above), because the houses have low pitched roofs covered with curved tiles. So in this present region, slate is unusual (again compared to the Touraine above) and was meant for the richer. That’s also why this house wasn’t too difficult to find using satellite view in Gmaps.

My cousin lives in this area (Jardres, 3 villages north of Fleuré), it’s a nice area. Poitiers is the biggest city around but isn’t as lively as some other equivalent towns (as per my cousins say :-D). Nearby (N-W) is the town of Chauvigny with its ruined castle and church overlooking the town:
